As I had always enjoyed good health, I took it more or less for granted, even after I had accepted Christian Science as a way of life. A few years ago, however, I learned that a mere belief my good health is not enough.

At the time, I faced a challenge of pain here and there in my body. Then, quite quickly my entire body was affected, so that I was hardly able to walk. I requested and received help in Christian Science. Through this prayerful aid I felt roused to examine my thinking and motives. As I did, I found that I mainly wanted to be relieved of pain. I finally realized that what was needed was a deep change of thought. I determined to take up the challenge and work it out alone with God. I told this to the practitioner then praying for me, and he graciously agreed to withdraw from the case.

To start with, I claimed for myself the truth of being I had already been working with—man's totally spiritual nature. During many sleepless nights I pondered particularly "the scientific statement of being" (see p. 468 of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy), often firmly acknowledging that I could not be mesmerized or hypnotized by the belief that there exists a power apart from God. This frequently lessened the discomfort.
