Some questions and answers about Christian Science

As irrepressible as the coming of a new season is the hunger to understand one another. We long to know more about our neighbors than simply meets the eye—especially what's in the heart, impelling their lives, providing courage as well as joy. It's encouraging to see diplomats and heads of state talking with each other, but often one feels that conversations over backyard fences are as significant, and sometimes maybe more effective, in helping to establish the stability that is so needed in our world today.

It seems useful to share a few conversations of this kind that have taken place recently, showing how Christian Scientists approach some of the deeper issues of life. There's nothing hidden or secretive about our Church. Ever since its doors first opened over a hundred years ago, the public has been welcome to attend our services. Each Church of Christ, Scientist, maintains a Reading Room where a wide range of information is available. Nevertheless, in a world that places more emphasis on technology than on the inner spirit, there has been considerable misunderstanding of Christian Science.

The following questions were actually asked of Christian Scientists in one context or another, and we've done our best to reproduce the answers as they were given. Some material was taken from correspondence with our Church's information office, the Committee on Publication. Other points were made during talks that Christian Scientists were invited to give to neighboring churches or educational groups. These are not meant to be a statement of church policy but rather a window into the religious convictions of Christian Scientists and the nature of our Church.
