My first encounter with Christian Science occurred when a friend invited me to attend a class in a Christian Science Sunday School with him. There we discussed the Bible Lesson as outlined in the Christian Science Quarterly. I was impressed by the fact that the teachings of Christian Science are impersonal. I also felt that Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy had been written by a very spiritually-minded woman. Several years later I began to attend a Christian Science Sunday School on a regular basis. I learned then that Mrs. Eddy's writings were divinely inspired.
By the time I was twenty, the age when pupils leave the Sunday School, I had become a serious student of Science and had had some fine healings. Soon I joined a branch church and later The Mother Church. My healings in Christian Science include those of the smoking habit and many physical troubles. With the prayerful help of a Christian Science practitioner, I was able to demonstrate an improved financial situation. This included finding a suitable home for my family.
I have also had many proofs of God's protection. Two stand out in memory. I live on the edge of a midwestern town, and one afternoon I was burning trash in a large open incinerator. I had a good fire going and was emptying trash containers into the hot fire when I felt strongly led to get away from the fire. I obeyed, just as a pressurized can blew up, sending particles of glass and embers upward. Had I stayed where I had been standing, I would have been struck in the face. I silently said, "Thank you, God."
