The Christian Century
From The Christian Century, March 13, 1985
"People are fed up with claims, fed up with promises, and sick to death of ideologies and lies. What people covet is example.... If one were to live a life of loving works, one would never need to worry about how to tell people about Jesus. People would ask what makes one unique. Once one has earned by one's works the right to speak about the love of Christ, evangelism virtually takes care of itself.
"No wonder we are embarrassed to speak of our faith! We are afraid that people hearing our words will look for deeds to match our words. Perhaps James ['I will show you my faith by works.'] provides the prerequisite to any 'relevant' evangelism—modern or otherwise.
