Christian Science came into my life during the Second World...

Christian Science came into my life during the Second World War, when I was a student at the Royal Academy of Music in London. I had been brought up in a good Christian home. But with all the terrible goings-on around me, I just couldn't find the "God of love" in whom I had been taught to believe. I had begun to despair of ever finding any peace of mind.

One morning on my way to the academy, I was feeling particularly depressed and tired, for there had been severe bombings during the night. I passed a Christian Science Reading Room, and in the window was a beautiful bowl of spring flowers. The flowers were so lovely that I just had to stop and gaze at them. I remember saying almost out loud, "That is reality. What we experienced in the night was unreal." I went into the Reading Room, talked with the librarian, and purchased my first copy of Science and Health.

Mrs. Eddy tells us in this book (p. vii), "The time for thinkers has come." I pondered every statement I read, until I knew that Christian Science was the way of Life for me. Since that time I have had a very successful operatic and concert career that kept me traveling to many parts of the world. In each city I always sought out the Christian Science Reading Room and the branch church, and I made many dear friends. I attribute my successful career to the study and practice of Christian Science.
