While reading the testimonies of healing in the Christian Science...

While reading the testimonies of healing in the Christian Science periodicals, I have noticed how often a healing comes about through one's expression of gratitude. Before raising Lazarus, Christ Jesus said (John 11:41), "Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me." Gratitude acknowledges the presence and goodness of God. In the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health, Mrs. Eddy has this to say (p. 3): "Gratitude is much more than a verbal expression of thanks. Action expresses more gratitude than speech." The healing effect of this truth has been proved many times in my experience.

Several years ago I suffered what appeared to be a severe injury after falling from a considerable height. At first I was unable to walk, sit, stand, or drive. I could do nothing but lie on my back in bed in one position. As I live by myself, the situation seemed desperate. Nevertheless, I remembered how often a sense of gratitude had brought healing in the past. So I refused to let the evidence of injury prevent me from counting my blessings. After a time I was able to move about for brief periods to go to the bathroom and the kitchen.

I had a small copy of the textbook that I could study. I also had a copy of the Christian Science Hymnal (Words Only). A telephone was at my bedside from which I could ring for the prayerful help of a Christian Science practitioner. This I did at the outset, and the practitioner and I talked daily. I was encouraged to reject the suggestion that the physical condition had power, and to hold to this truth (Acts 17:28): "In him [God] we live, and move, and have our being." Each day I was refreshed with spiritual truths. Much purification of thought took place.
