One summer evening over ten years ago, while...
One summer evening over ten years ago, while I was driving home on a country road with my three-year-old son, I suddenly had severe heart palpitations. When my heart stopped beating completely at one point, I felt intensely afraid that I was passing on. Even though I was extremely weak, I managed to stop the car at the side of the road, all the while declaring out loud "the scientific statement of being" from page 468 of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. (My son was asleep in a child's car seat next to me.)
My car was facing west, and I could see the sunset. Gradually, numbness crept through my whole body; the thought came to me that this was the last sunset I would ever see. Then I realized that this kind of thinking was not the way to save myself, and immediately I started to affirm some of the statements of truth I remembered from Science and Health. I continued, despite the strong suggestion that my efforts were useless.
Then I thought, "If only my mother were here to help me!" So many times when I was a child my mother had helped me by praying in Christian Science, which always brought comfort and healing. Then I realized that God is my real Mother and Father, and that infinite Love is always present to comfort and heal. Immediately I felt an uplifted sense of peace, and the overwhelming feelings of fear subsided. As I kept dwelling on this simple, spiritual fact, the weakness and numbness diminished, too. I knew I would recover. After about an hour I was able to drive home and put our son to bed. Later, when my wife arrived home, I asked her to call a Christian Science practitioner for me.
