FROM THE DIRECTORS
In October 1983, a civil action was brought against the Register of Copyrights (of the Copyright Office of the United States). The action seeks to declare unconstitutional the 1971 Act of Congress which extended the copyright on Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy through the year 2046. The complaint in this suit was amended in April 1984 to include The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts, the owner of the copyright, as an additional defendant.
The lawsuit was brought by former church members who in the past have circulated misrepresentations of Mrs. Eddy's views and actions in relation to the copyright on Science and Health. Our report in The Christian Science Journal in October 1981 gives the basis for obtaining the additional copyright protection—the deep desire to preserve the purity and wholeness of the revelation set forth in Science and Health.
Expert professional legal support has been retained by The Mother Church to represent its interests in the case. A court hearing on the constitutional issues will probably take place in the spring of this year.
