We were introduced to Christian Science during...

We were introduced to Christian Science during the economic depression of the 1930's, when a neighbor, seeing our great need, invited my husband and me to attend a Christian Science lecture. This was a couple of months before our second child was born, and we had many problems of illness, lack, unemployment, and unhappiness. I don't remember much about the lecture, although I still remember the love expressed that night. Nevertheless, it was several years before we took up the study of Christian Science seriously and practiced it for ourselves.

About three months after we had attended the lecture my husband, who was then employed as a pilot, was cranking an old-type airplane when a student at the controls misunderstood some signals. As a result my husband's right hand was mangled. For some time the doctors thought they would have to amputate, but my husband refused to consider this course of action.

When our Christian Scientist neighbor heard of the accident, she asked my husband if he would go to a Christian Science practitioner for treatment through prayer. Neither of us knew enough about Christian Science to be willing to depend on it, but since our neighbor had been so nice to us, my husband did agree to keep an appointment with a practitioner. From the time of the accident three weeks before, my husband had been in constant pain, often walking the floor at night. When the practitioner prayed for him, with my husband's permission, during that one visit, he had almost immediate relief. The doctors, who regularly simply cleansed and bandaged the hand, noticed the sudden improvement. The blood poisoning cleared up, and there was no more talk of amputation. The bones, which the doctors had thought would have to be broken and reset, as they were not knitting properly, healed without complication.
