FOR YOUNG PEOPLE
A whole new world
It was autumn of my freshman year in college. There must have been a dozen of us in my dorm room talking about Dante's circles of hell and what this literature meant in the world today. In a corner across the room a girl I hardly knew began talking about healing. I was interested, but the subject changed and someone else began to speak. I kept asking the girl, "How do you heal?" Finally someone politely pointed out that we had moved off that topic. But for me the night, the room, and Dante just blew away. Someone could tell me about healing.
Here I was, a music major, and the sickliest singer I knew. I had spent my growing-up winters chronically ill with croup. I had come away to college carrying a pharmacy of medicine.
