When I was first becoming acquainted with Christian Science,...

When I was first becoming acquainted with Christian Science, I could understand almost nothing of it—neither what I read in Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy and in the periodicals, nor what I heard at a Sunday service and later at a Christian Science lecture (although intellectual pride then told me that the fault lay with Science, not me). However, I prayed earnestly, seeking to know whether Science was the truth.

This prayer was answered when our second child was born. The friend who had introduced me to Christian Science had offered to pray for me at the time of the birth, and I had accepted her offer (out of kindness, not because I could see any reason to pray at such a time).

Everything went well during labor. Then, when it was time for the baby to be born, it seemed impossible for the birth to take place normally. I was having the baby at home, with a midwife in attendance. The midwife, aware of complications, sent for a doctor who, in turn, sent for an ambulance to take me to hospital. I was not frightened, but instead put my trust in God. This proved to be a very great blessing.
