My first healing through Christian Science took place over thirty-five years ago. At that time I had engaged a Christian Science practitioner for help with a problem of ulcers. (Prior to taking up the study of Science, I had been operated on for this difficulty. But it had returned within a year.) Also, at that time, I had growths on the bottom of one foot that were very uncomfortable and which, I had been told by a doctor, were malignant. But I did not mention this to the practitioner. (I had previously had these growths removed by acid treatment and surgery, but each time they had reappeared.) However, through the prayer of this practitioner concerning the first difficulty, the growths disappeared and have never returned. The condition of ulcers was completely healed after a period of much spiritual growth on my part.

When our daughter was in the second grade, one day the school nurse called and asked to see me. At our meeting the nurse informed me that our daughter had a hearing problem which could worsen. She said that an outstanding ear specialist would be in our town within a few weeks and asked if she could make an appointment with him for our daughter. I explained to the nurse that my husband and I were Christian Scientists and the problem would be handled through prayer, but I thanked her for her interest. From that moment on I determined never to allow the least doubt of our little girl's perfection as God's idea to enter my thought.

In the days following my visit to the nurse, I diligently studied the Bible and Mrs. Eddy's writings to realize more of the nature of man's true senses. In the Glossary of Science and Health Mrs. Eddy gives this definition (p. 585): "Ears. Not organs of the so-called corporeal senses, but spiritual understanding." I kept this and other spiritual truths uppermost in my thought, and I denied as powerless such negative, mortal suggestions as hearing impairment. In a few weeks, I gained so much peace that the problem just faded from my thinking. At that time, our daughter's hearing returned entirely—she was free!
