My first acquaintance with Christian Science came many years ago. At that time I had hay fever, and medicine failed to give me any relief. Somehow I obtained a copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy and read it through in a very short time. I was not healed of the hay fever then (although I was later), but I did receive some relief. However, a rather strange thing happened. I was completely healed of the smoking habit, even though I had not thought anything about being healed of it.

Shortly after this I happened to have a conversation with a fellow employee who was First Reader in a branch church. In the course of our discussion I became convinced that God was the source of my supply. That opened my eyes more to spiritual reality. But I still didn't begin a study of Christian Science.

Then a childhood friend sent me a subscription to the Sentinel. From that time on I really became serious about Science. Eventually I felt led to join a branch church and later The Mother Church [The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts]. These steps were followed by my applying and later being accepted for class instruction by a teacher of Christian Science—an opportunity I had desired ever since becoming a serious student of Science. I am most grateful for what I learned at that time.
