Don't get mad. Don't get even. Get understanding!

One of the catch phrases making the rounds these days is "Don't get mad—get even."

Clever as this phrase may be, what it suggests is the substitution of one negative approach to human relationships for another—swapping rage for revenge. A no-win situation.

The Gospels recount a dramatic incident played out shortly before the crucifixion. A threatening crowd surrounded Christ Jesus. Sensing the impending violence against his leader, one of Jesus' followers, the disciple Simon Peter, lashed out at Malchus, a servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear. Luke records: "Jesus answered and said, Suffer ye thus far. And he touched his ear, and healed him." Luke 22:51.
