At one time I was let go from a responsible position at a major corporation. I was certainly unprepared for this, especially since the company had just transferred me some three thousand miles to a new location. At first, resentment, fear, doubt, and loneliness set in. I was extremely concerned about financial security, and I felt a sense of worthlessness. But because I had been raised in the Christian Science Sunday School, my thoughts soon turned to the love that God has for His children. These words from Hymn No. 82 in the Christian Science Hymnal, "God is working His purpose out / As year succeeds to year," helped calm me, and they enabled me to discount the belief that I was a mortal searching for fleeting happiness. I knew that I had to pray earnestly to discern God's purpose for His creation.

I called a Christian Science practitioner for help through prayer. She told me that our Father loved me and was providing for me, and I was encouraged to recognize that there was a blessing to be found in this situation and an opportunity to grow in grace. She helped me understand that my paramount need was for a clearer understanding of man's place in the divine order.

As the days passed, I became extremely grateful for the time I was devoting to concentrated study of the Bible Lesson given in the Christian Science Quarterly. I was also gaining a great deal from reading the Christian Science periodicals. I began to perceive my true nature as God's image, fully employed in reflecting Him.
