FOR YOUNG PEOPLE

You can prove it!

Have you ever heard a person boast about something he could do and someone else respond, "Oh yeah? Prove it!"

If a person can show his skill, we are convinced he knows what he's talking about. A proof, then, is the result of putting a theory or proposition to a practical test.

When I was in college, I was very self-conscious about a large wart on my finger. As a matter of fact, I hated it and went to great lengths to hide it. During the next few years more warts appeared. They were painful and repulsive to me. But, to be honest, I tolerated them grudgingly by trying to ignore them.

One day a friend was asking questions about Christian Science. I told her that one thing I really appreciated about my religion was that it was scientific. It could be proved. It was practical.

Then I happened to look down at my hands. I realized that she was looking too; the warts were obvious to both of us. Although I knew I had had many healings, now I thought to myself, "Oh yeah? Prove it!"

I humbly yearned to prove, in a scientific way, that the application of divine Truth heals. I wanted to fulfill the biblical statement "But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves." James 1:22.

While talking to a Christian Science practitioner about this situation, I began to see that the real problem was not "my" warts. The problem was thinking that I was a mortal, a flawed mortal! My concept of who I was needed to be healed. Mrs. Eddy writes, "God is the creator of man, and, the divine Principle of man remaining perfect, the divine idea or reflection, man, remains perfect." Science and Health, p. 470. This perfect man was my spiritual and only expression.

My goal was to love God more and to become more aware of man's spiritual identity. This sentence from Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy was very helpful: "A spiritual idea has not a single element of error, and this truth removes properly whatever is offensive." Ibid., p. 463.

God, good, is all. Man, as God's spiritual reflection, is His perfect image—without a flaw. Nothing can attach itself to an idea that is already complete. I began to discern that none of mortal mind's suggestions (errors) had ever belonged to me. They were powerless and unreal, despite the presentation of the material senses.

Declaring what was true of God and His creation enabled me to gain a better understanding of my actual, spiritual nature as His unflawed image and likeness. Within a few weeks all of the warts completely disappeared. The evidence of the material senses was false and therefore it vanished.

On several occasions since this healing, my friend and others have commented that they have never known anyone with such naturally soft, lovely hands.

It doesn't matter how great or how small a challenge may be. Each demonstration of Christian Science is a scientific proof of God's omnipresence.

If you are confronted with the thought "Oh yeah? Prove it!" you can humbly and confidently affirm, "Yes, I can," knowing that all wisdom, strength, and power come from God.
