Because I have depended on the teachings of Christian Science...
Because I have depended on the teachings of Christian Science for health, supply, and satisfaction for nearly half a century, this expression of my gratitude in writing is surely overdue. I have found a spiritual understanding of God to be a continuing, unfailing source of inspiration and guidance. Challenges have certainly occurred, some of them severe. But through spiritual growth—a better understanding of God and of man's nature as His likeness—these challenges have been met.
At a time when I was a junior college student, I was helping my brother with a fence-building project on our family's farm. One day my trouser leg got caught in a coupling of a power takeoff shaft mounted on a small tractor. I was drawn quickly and firmly down to the shaft, but when my groin reached the shaft, the tractor's engine died. There was evidence of damage to my knee and tailbone, but no bones were broken and no open wounds were evident.
No examination was made by a physician. Rather, a Christian Science practitioner was reached promptly; prayerful work was begun immediately. My family and I prayed too, and as a result of this prayer I was able to carry out my duties on the farm and at school. Although at first it was painful to lift heavy objects or to climb, kneel, or squat—all of which were necessary in the performance of my duties—these restrictions were overcome in a few weeks.
