Christian Science came into my life at a time of great need and as a direct answer to prayer. I was seventeen years old and had been in hospital for several years suffering from tuberculosis.

One day when I was in deep despair, I opened my Bible and read for the first time Christ Jesus' words (Matt. 7:7) "Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you." I closed the Bible and humbly prayed that if there was any truth in the world, I might find it, for I longed to know God.

My prayer was answered, for a few days afterward a friend told me about Christian Science and lent me a copy of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. At that time I had never heard of this Science, so with an open mind I read the textbook from cover to cover. There was a great deal I could not understand. But when I read this question and answer in the wonderful chapter titled "Prayer," I knew that Christian Science was the truth I had been seeking (p. 2): "Are we benefited by praying? Yes, the desire which goes forth hungering after righteousness is blessed of our Father, and it does not return unto us void."
