"The next lessons"—a strong fortress (Part II)

Prepared for the Church Activities Department of The Mother Church. Seventh of eight articles.

Mrs. Eddy was especially skilled in the use of questions and answers in teaching. She developed this ability largely through her own spiritual advancement, and we can do the same by following the Christly model she followed so successfully. (Christ Jesus' use of questions and answers and Mrs. Eddy's requirement of this teaching method in the Manual of The Mother Church were covered in the previous article of this series.)

We Knew Mary Baker Eddy, published by The Christian Science Publishing Society, contains many examples of the kinds of questions she asked. A biographer records that in her last class she asked the deep but simple question "What is God to you?" of every pupil. Irving C. Tomlinson, Twelve Years with Mary Baker Eddy (Boston: The Christian Science Publishing Society, 1966), p. 89 . We also have ready access to Mrs. Eddy's classbook, the chapter "Recapitulation" in Science and Health, which consists of penetrating questions and thorough answers.
