I had to make a decision about school a few years ago
I had to make a decision about school a few years ago. We lived close to the only school for Christian Scientists in Los Angeles, and after visiting this school, I had a desire to attend it. Classes were to begin in just a couple of days, so all the paperwork and family financial arrangements had to be made. My father, who is not a Christian Scientist, was happy to have my mother, who is a Scientist, enroll me. The fact was that we had listened for the guidance of the one Mind, God, and we felt that this school was the right one for me to attend. Two days later I started school, and everything was in order.
During my second year there, I was chosen to be a Reader at the school's Thanksgiving service. I accepted this position with honor, but it also included a great deal of work. Everything went well until the day before the service, when I slipped and slightly injured my back. I was concerned about being able to read the next day, so when I got home I called a Christian Science practitioner. He assured me that man cannot fall away from God's control and love.
I read that week's Bible Lesson, found in the Christian Science Quarterly, and these words of Christ Jesus stood out to me (Luke 4:8): "Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve." I thought of this statement every time I felt a pain in my back, and I just knew that error could not overpower God. The truth was that nothing could slip out of His control. Therefore, the back condition was actually no more than an illusion.
