Recently I attended a wedding

Recently I attended a wedding. The young couple being married were of different religious faiths and had arranged for the ceremony to be performed by a minister from each of their churches. This kind of ceremony seems to be very common among young people today. I thought to myself, "I wonder how this marriage will work out?" Then I began to think back on the early days of my own marriage, because it, too, is one of mixed religious faiths. I am a Christian Scientist, and my husband is not.

When we were married, there was some family concern because our religious backgrounds differed. This presented no problem to us, since we had our hearts set on building a home of our own and raising a family. Later, however, in very subtle ways, difficulties did develop.

As a Christian Scientist, I loved my religion and had always turned to it for healing and spiritual inspiration. But I had much to learn about "living" what I loved in practical ways. I had not yet recognized how undeveloped, in my own thinking, were the qualities of humility, compassion, willingness, and forgiveness. I needed to discern how necessary these ingredients are to keep a relationship sweet and meaningful and to ensure health and happiness in the home.
