At a time when I had begun reading the Bible,...
At a time when I had begun reading the Bible, and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy but had not yet decided to rely on Christian Science for healing, I underwent six major surgeries. One of these operations was a thyroidectomy, and I had been told by doctors that my life depended on my regularly taking a thyroid extract. In addition, I was addicted to painkilling drugs; and I had bleeding ulcers, anemia, and a chronic sinus infection. I also slept in traction every night because of a back condition. Our medical and pharmaceutical bills combined were running into very large amounts. Still, I was not ready to take a radical stand for healing in Christian Science. So, I went ahead with a planned sinus operation.
After the operation my husband and my parents both had to leave the country for business reasons, and my four children and I were left in the care of a housekeeper and a nurse. Then the housekeeper and the nurse both became ill, and for a few overwhelming hours I felt totally alone. It was at this point that I realized I wanted to turn to Christian Science for healing. Imagine the joy I felt when this light dawned on me. I recognized that God was my true Father-Mother, and I rejoiced over the promise of healing in these words (Science and Health, p. vii): "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings."
The children and I swept everything out of the medicine cabinet into wastepaper baskets. Then we marched out into the summer rain singing "Onward, Christian soldiers" (Christian Science Hymnal, No. 264), and we dumped all the material remedies into the garbage can.
