One night on returning home from a meeting, I found that my husband had passed on quietly in his sleep. He had been active during the day, and his passing was totally unexpected. I was not prepared for the shock. Loving friends handled the necessary details, then I asked to be left alone.
Years of the study of Christian Science gave me the strengthening assurance that this dear one's life had not really ceased. This particular passage of Mrs. Eddy's in Science and Health, which I had pondered some days before, was most helpful (pp. 427-428): "The dream of death must be mastered by Mind here or hereafter. Thought will waken from its own material declaration, 'I am dead,' to catch this trumpet-word of Truth, 'There is no death, no inaction, diseased action, overaction, nor reaction.'"
In the morning came the clear realization that the qualities I loved about my husband—his kindness, gentleness, and consideration—I could never lose. I had seen that because those qualities are derived from God, I could never be deprived of them.
