Several years ago I suddenly became quite ill, something unusual for me as I had had no serious health problems up till then. The pain in my left side was so severe that at times I seemed unable to stand, sit, walk, or even talk.

At the time this occurred I was a member of The Mother Church and of a branch Church of Christ, Scientist, taking an active part in branch church affairs. Yet, when faced with this problem, I recognized that I had been studying the letter of Christian Science without understanding the spiritual meaning of what I was reading.
