I was brought up in a Protestant church of another denomination. Though I felt a deep love for God, I had very little understanding of how He could help me in my life.
My introduction to Christian Science came the summer I graduated from high school when a friend and I visited her aunt in a distant city. The aunt was a Christian Scientist, and during the several weeks we were with her, she took us regularly to the Sunday services and Wednesday testimony meetings at a local branch Church of Christ, Scientist. I was tremendously impressed with the testimonies of healing. People told how they were using their understanding of God to bring harmony and health into their everyday lives. However, when I returned home I gave no more thought to Christian Science.
Years later, married and with three young children, I became very unhappy. Emotionally and physically unwell, I spent time wondering what life was all about and where I fitted into it. I was alone a great deal at night, always feeling tired and irritable, and I continually turned to alcohol to strengthen me and help me get through the evening.
