"... a very present help in trouble"
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea. Ps. 46: 1, 2 .
Certainly no scriptural truth is more moving than the luminous theme that God is Love—our Shepherd and comforter, a friend we can turn to in trouble, the ever-present Father-Mother, the almighty Mind whose law saves and heals. Such a thought, quietly considered and accepted, deeply touches the heart.
So often we try to meet turmoil and tragedy, dark fears in our thoughts and hard buffetings from the world, by putting our faith in our own brave personal efforts. Yet the unfolding understanding that divine Love really is "a very present help in trouble" is far more powerful and profound than those unaided efforts can be. It is far more substantial than words on a page. We gain confirmation that God exists, that He is Love, and that infinite Love is available to help us, through the unmistakable changes this understanding brings in our lives.
