For almost forty years I suffered from nightmares

For almost forty years I suffered from nightmares. They started when I was not quite five years old. Sometimes I had three a night. Often I'd wake up, calm myself, and go back to sleep, only to return to the same nightmare.

When I was a child I feared sleep and did my best to hold back the certain coming of slumber, when once again I'd be at the mercy of those "dark forms" that waited in recurring dream sequences. My mother took me to physicians, psychiatrists, and osteopaths in an effort to cure me. At times, on a daily basis I was examined by doctors who did everything they could to help a terrified little boy.

As I grew into my teens, I gradually withdrew from discussing my nightly bouts with nightmares and accepted them as "my thing" in life. Before I was legally old enough, I began to drink. I found bliss in drunken slumber, and came to dread those times I'd have to "dry out" and stay away from drinking for a night.
