Like many students of Christian Science, I had my first healing while I was reading the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, for the first time. The healing was so natural that initially I was not even aware of it. Then, after some days had gone by, it suddenly dawned on me that I was no longer bothered with an organic malfunction which had plagued me from childhood.
At that time I was a young mother with a baby son. One night I was wakened by the baby, who was having difficulty breathing. We did not have a telephone yet, and I did not know a Christian Science practitioner, so I gathered the little one into my arms and held him in an upright position for the rest of the night. When morning came, I propped the baby up in his cart with pillows and pushed the cart for several blocks to a Christian Science Reading Room. There a kind librarian recommended a Christian Science practitioner who lived nearby. She even telephoned the practitioner for me and made an appointment, so that I could take the baby to the practitioner's home for treatment.
When we got there, the practitioner prayed for the child. We were in her home for quite a long time. The practitioner then suggested that I take the baby home and tuck him in his crib for the night. She said that if the baby became disturbed, I should stand by his crib and carefully repeat and think about the Lord's Prayer, with its spiritual interpretation by Mrs. Eddy in Science and Health (pp. 16-17). It begins:
