The beauty of stillness
Our era of fast foods, instant communications, and numerous timesaving devices has not spawned greater individual peace. People's spare moments appear to be going toward troubling activity, as the recent proliferation of books and courses on stress management suggests.
Genuine peace comes through communion with God. According to the Bible, stillness is an ideal context for this communion. "Stand still, and consider the wondrous works of God," Job 37:14. we find in the book of Job. "Be still, and know that I am God," Ps. 46:10. wrote the Psalmist.
Stillness, of course, is not an end in itself. To be quiet physically and mentally does not permanently heal a tendency to feel pressured and churned up. But when such stillness is used to seek and know God, it is a vital healing quality.
