My first encounter with Christian Science came when I was still quite young. One day a brother, my grandparents, and I were about to climb onto a horse-drawn carriage when suddenly the team of horses ran away. My brother fell, and the carriage rolled over him. He lay there motionless. Immediately the horses were caught, and my grandparents and I drove with the child to a doctor.

After examining him, the doctor said there appeared to be internal injuries and that he didn't know of anything he could do to help. Then I remembered that my parents had spoken about a woman who belonged to a religion that healed through prayer. I told my grandparents, and they decided to take my brother to the home of this woman. At that time there were not yet any Christian Science practitioners listed for our city. However, this woman was a very dedicated student of Science. Through her earnest prayer, my brother was healed.

From childhood on, I struggled with fear, and also suffered regularly recurring attacks of malaria. My mother and I sought healing for both in Christian Science. We began to study the Bible Lessons in the Christian Science Quarterly, and we often read the book of Psalms and the Sermon on the Mount in the Bible. However, the malaria attacks continued, and I always resorted to quinine in order to combat the fever.
