I was in the medical profession for many years— first in the military, and later in a civilian hospital. Eventually I went on to pharmaceutical research. The latter step was taken after I'd majored in college in the biological sciences.

Throughout this period of time I developed a progressively worsening condition that was diagnosed as chronic bronchitis with asthmatic and allergic complications. Although I was treated with a variety of medications, none was curative. These measures were an attempt to bring relief to the discomforts associated with abnormal breathing. (The frequent paroxysmal attacks I suffered at night made lying down virtually impossible.)

I became more debilitated and incapacitated to the point where my job was in jeopardy. I felt completely discouraged. One afternoon during an extremely uncomfortable and fearful bout with this illness, I wondered, "Is there no answer?" Immediately I thought of Christian Science. (I had been raised in a household where Christian Science was practiced, and had attended the Christian Science Sunday School. Although I had left Science upon entering the military service, Science had made a lasting impression on me.) The words "Christian Science" had come to me as clearly as if someone had spoken them. With much effort I rose and dug out the copy of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, which I had used as a boy in Sunday School. For some reason, through the years, I had kept my Sunday School books, and now I knew why.
