In the late 1960's, one afternoon I was driving alone on a California freeway not far from home at what was then the speed limit of sixty-five miles an hour. When I had to slow down suddenly, I was struck from the rear by a truck. I was rushed to the hospital but, once there, managed to telephone a Christian Science practitioner for prayerful assistance. With her help, the fog of confusion and shock lifted quickly. Examination and X-rays revealed broken ribs and multiple, severe bruises. I declined medical treatment, however, explaining that I was a Christian Scientist, and went home that same day in a taxi.

The examining physician had predicted three weeks of pain from the broken ribs, but I spent a pain-free night. He had also given me the name of another physician to consult for treatment of the bruises, but this I did not do.

The next day, with an important errand to take care of, and no car, but feeling fine, I walked about two miles—although taxis and public transportation were available. The Monday following the accident I returned to work, to the amazement of my colleagues. During the day, one person remarked that the bruises seemed to be disappearing before their eyes—the healing was taking place that quickly. A couple of days later, with much gratitude for her support, I was able to dismiss the practitioner.
