Duties without burdens
All-loving God does not impose heavy burdens or bitter toil on anyone. On the contrary, it is the purpose of divine Love to bless. Love's law, obeyed, removes burdensome experiences and redeems mankind. We read in Isaiah: "Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke?" Isa. 58:6.
The greatest and smallest burdens have been imposed by aggressive mental beliefs unwittingly accepted by countless generations. Jesus, however, fully demonstrated the capacity of the Christ to expose and destroy such beliefs. He showed, for example, that Christ, Truth, is able to translate every legitimate duty into progressive activity. He knew and proved that man's real being is never wearied. So we can carry out our work of expressing divine qualities.
Christ Jesus said, "My yoke is easy, and my burden is light." Matt. 11:30. Wasn't he teaching that the most onerous task can be lightened by spiritual motivation? The Master was convinced that his work of salvation was Love-anointed, Mind-directed, and Soul-inspired. He rejected the temptation to be burdened, despite his unparalleled sacrifices. He encouraged all who "labour and are heavy laden" to "take my yoke." Vv. 28, 29 . His first disciples learned that following the Christ, regardless of hardships, was the true path.
