Divine purpose over human will

Sound motives are a key factor in the success of every right endeavor. Mrs. Eddy states: "A wrong motive involves defeat. In the Science of Mind-healing, it is imperative to be honest, for victory rests on the side of immutable right. To understand God strengthens hope, enthrones faith in Truth, and verifies Jesus' word: 'Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.' " Science and Health, p. 446.

Before attempting any activity or expressing any thought, even before formulating any conclusion, we find it helpful to examine our motive. Is it to glorify God and to further our understanding of His will? Are we laying down material beliefs and freely admitting Christ, Truth, so that God's purpose may be expressed—or are we exercising human will?

The more clearly we determine our true purpose and renew our vision, the more prepared we are to let go of mortal selfhood and to put on spirituality. Then we become receptive to God's communication. King Solomon turned to God and prayed for an understanding heart so he might rule properly and thereby fulfill God's purpose. He did not ask God for greatness or riches, nor that God remove his challenges. And his right motive was richly rewarded. God answered Solomon, "Behold, I have done according to thy words: lo, I have given thee a wise and an understanding heart; so that there was none like thee before thee, neither after thee shall any arise like unto thee." I Kings 3:12.
