Does food really sustain us?

Sometimes we encounter trials. But admitting that God is omnipresent and perfect, and that we are in reality the reflection of that perfection, will see us through. Trials can prove the power of divine truths—can prove God's care of His man.

For many people one daily trial involves food. We are bombarded on all sides with claims about food—the kinds and amounts we are supposed to need each day to have a balanced diet and take proper care of the body. How should we regard newspaper and television advertisements and personal conversations that advance these claims?

Christ Jesus told his disciples: "Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink .... Is not the life more than meat ...?" Matt. 6:25. In this rhetorical question, surely the Master was referring to the divine Life, which he was living and showing us how to live. When it was time to eat, Jesus did so, but he never accepted the general belief that food has power to sustain or destroy. He knew that true being is incorporeal and eternal, and that his only real need was to reflect God every moment. The Master rejected mortal theories because he comprehended man's oneness with God as His son. He knew there is no power but divine Spirit.
