The well-functioning body
In a television newscast a medical doctor was asked to prescribe remedies for the suffering that often follows overindulgence. With a knowing smile he concluded, "And, of course, there is always meditation!"
What kind of meditation? In Christian Science one learns that contemplation of the things of Spirit, recognition of the spiritual nature of man and the universe, not only turns us away from overindulgence but ensures the harmonious functioning of the body at all times. "O how love I thy law!" sang the Psalmist. "It is my meditation all the day." Ps. 119:97. How do the contemplation and living of God's law keep the body healthy?
God's law is the divine force that maintains the real man and universe Spirit has made. We meditate on God's law as we think of perfect Spirit, or Mind, as the one cause and governing Principle of all that exists. Certainly, Spirit's creation does not consist of matter or corporeality. It is composed of spiritual ideas, which express the nature of their perfect source. Mrs. Eddy writes: "God is All-in-all. Hence He is in Himself only, in His own nature and character, and is perfect being, or consciousness. He is all the Life and Mind there is or can be. Within Himself is every embodiment of Life and Mind." Unity of Good, p. 3. "Every embodiment": That precludes the existence of anything other than that one perfect Life and Mind and its expression. This true, scientific view of creation, when held to, banishes fears about the body and keeps it functioning harmoniously.
