Several years ago I was suffering with severe pain...
Several years ago I was suffering with severe pain in my shoulder and upper arm. Movement became so difficult that I could not comb my hair or reach the kitchen cupboards. I prayed earnestly to understand God as the source of my true being. The fact that creative Mind is all-acting assured me that as God's idea I was forever expressing His freedom of action, His harmony, regardless of the physical sense testimony. Yet although I enjoyed seeking and finding truths of my spiritual identity through study of the Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, the problem did not yield.
One week during this time, the Bible Lesson in the Christian Science Quarterly included an account of how Christ Jesus healed the man with the withered hand. The Bible tells us that Jesus commanded the man (Mark 3:5): "Stretch forth thine hand." The account continues, "And he stretched it out: and his hand was restored whole as the other."
I was reading of that healing when it occurred to me, "Jesus could do that for me if he were here." Immediately I recalled Hymn No. 412 in the Christian Science Hymnal, which says: "The Christ is here, all dreams of error breaking, /Unloosing bonds of all captivity." "Of course," I realized, "the healing Christ is here! It's with me now." I felt impelled to obey Jesus' command and "stretch forth" my arm. As I raised it, the pain departed, and I had free use of the arm again. The difficulty has not returned; it was wiped out of thought as I acknowledged the potency of the Christ, so vividly illustrated in the Master's healing works.
