Perfecting our defenses

As we move from a materially oriented to a more spiritual life, we can spare ourselves much anguish by learning to recognize those signs that indicate the intrusion of evil suggestions—signs such as a feeling of physical discomfort, fear, or anxiety.

By using the term "animal magnetism" for evil suggestion, Christian Science alerts us to the way evil would lure us, by deception, from a true sense of God's allness and from our unity with Him. Animal magnetism would have us believe that man is a poor, helpless, suffering mortal; that his happiness is at the mercy of certain so-called material laws, which, it claims, govern his existence from cradle to grave.

But we have a strong defense against this basic falsehood. It consists of an active, conscious, continuing awareness of the great healing truths found in the Bible and throughout Mary Baker Eddy's writings.
