How grateful I am to have been raised by a mother who was a staunch and loyal Christian Scientist. Because she relied exclusively on this Science for healing, it has been natural for me to do the same.

One time in the course of my work, which involves a certain amount of physical activity, I strained myself. Although it was difficult, I managed to finish up for the day and return home. That night there was severe pain, and as I attempted to turn over in bed, I felt something move internally. The experience was painful. My wife read to me from Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy until I calmed down and was able to get my thoughts in order. Then she asked me if I wished her to call a Christian Science practitioner for help. By that time it was quite late, so I told her to wait until morning to make the call.

These comforting words from Hymn No. 51 in the Christian Science Hymnal reminded me of the true nature of man:
