For eighteen years I studied the Bible with deep reverence for and faith in its promises. These promises kept my hope alive that a perfect understanding of God would someday be revealed to me. The desire to know the truth of God and His man became so great that I often grew very anxious. When I felt this way, I sometimes wept and would go to a quiet garden to pray.

My deep desire to know God led me one day to the home of a lady who was a Christian Scientist. She let me borrow some copies of The Christian Science Journal, which I took back with me to the garden and read. I became convinced of the truth in these magazines, so I went back to see the lady. A short time later she took me to my first Christian Science church service, where I was given a copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy.

I loved every page, every sentence, every thought of this book of Truth. At last I'd been given the gift of this Science, and now it was showing me the path that leads to eternal harmony and peace. It unlocked the door to Paradise, the kingdom of God, for me. I read all day and was filled with joy. I couldn't sleep at night for a week, as the truths I was learning were so wonderful. The Psalmist describes this sense (Ps. 21:1, 2): "The king shall joy in thy strength, O Lord; and in thy salvation how greatly shall he rejoice! Thou hast given him his heart's desire, and hast not withholden the request of his lips." On the second day I was healed of fear and severe palpitations—a complaint that I'd suffered with for several years and that I was told couldn't be cured.
