The Lesson-Sermon: gift and demand
The Lesson-Sermon, found in the Christian Science Quarterly, is indeed substantial spiritual nourishment for one who actively studies it. Dedicated study of the Bible Lesson demands action—the vigorous mental action of realizing God's allness and understanding more of His law. Active, arousing study impelled by God, divine Love, has unlimited capacity for spiritually transforming our lives.
At one point in my own study I became thrilled all over again with the discovery that the Lesson-Sermon is a veritable powerhouse of spiritual ideas that enable us to learn more about God, the source of unlimited good. Realizing this, I decided to dig more thoroughly by using Bible concordances and dictionaries to elucidate the meaning of various passages. I found my love and understanding of God deepening as I pursued this work. And I grew in the conviction that I must not only study but in every moment of my daily living apply the truth I was grasping.
I was beginning to understand that the testimony of the material senses is illusive. Effectively living the truth in my life demanded of me that I rebuke this testimony. I determined that no matter what these senses would try to say to me, bad or good, I could refuse to believe it. As idea, God's man can only see and hear spiritually, through spiritual sense. My work with the lesson was convincing me that life is completely spiritual, not material, and that evil or limitation of any kind is totally unreal, because totally unlike God, good.
