A few days before my husband and I were to leave on a trip to visit family, I felt some discomfort at the corner of one of my eyes where, for several years, there had been a small growth. Up till then I had not really been concerned about the growth. But the increased irritation made me recognize that I must strive to see myself as a complete and perfect spiritual idea of God, without "a single element of error." Mrs. Eddy tells us (Science and Health, p. 463), "A spiritual idea has not a single element of error, and this truth removes properly whatever is offensive." In addition to considering this statement, as I have done many times in the past, I worked with this Bible verse from Genesis 1:31, "And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good."

Our trip began early one morning. Although the drive took longer than usual because of traffic conditions, throughout the day I remained calm and serene. I used the hours on the road to read and ponder passages in that week's Bible Lesson from the Christian Science Quarterly.

A day or two later, while we were still visiting our daughter, the eye condition became unsightly and very painful. Since there was a great deal of fear, I phoned a friend, who was a Christian Scientist, and asked her to pray for me. She agreed to do this, and together we declared the allness of God and the nothingness of evil.
