As a child and for years of my adulthood, I was frequently troubled by hepatitis. Then one night, when peace eluded me, I opened a book I had borrowed, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. On pages 430 through 442 there is an allegory in which "a man is charged with having committed liver-complaint" (p. 430). As the allegory develops, disease-producing beliefs are repudiated through the law of divine Spirit, which restores Mortal Man to freedom. During my reading, the symptoms disappeared. I felt a wonderful, serene release. A spiritual rebirth had taken place, and with it had come my healing of hepatitis. Eventually I understood that through the purifying influence of infinite Truth, I had touched the hem of Christ's robe. Mrs. Eddy tells us (ibid., p. 569): "He that touches the hem of Christ's robe and masters his mortal beliefs, animality, and hate, rejoices in the proof of healing,—in a sweet and certain sense that God is Love."
A few years later, I was tempted once more to believe that hepatitis could be real. In the meantime, however, I had received my own copy of Science and Health and was studying the Bible Lessons with the help of the Christian Science Quarterly. Now I was able joyfully to banish this temptation once and for all, because I had more fully comprehended that there is no material law that can make God's children sick or miserable. There is only the government of God's spiritual law, which is supremely good. Since that time I have remained completely free of hepatitis.
How could I not be grateful for the Comforter, promised long ago by Christ Jesus and perceived by Mrs. Eddy in her role as Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science? Science and Health has answered the many questions that had tormented me and has given me a logical explanation of God and His perfect creation, including man. Through this teaching my thinking has been radically transformed. Everything has become new for me, and the dream-shadows of mortality are fading. I have also endeavored to help others find release from their burdens.
