The Bible Lesson: an introduction
[Written for the Sentinel]
The following article was prepared especially for readers not yet familiar with the Christian Science Lesson-Sermons.
If we were to speak today to Christian Scientists from New Delhi, India; Hamburg, Germany; Sao Paulo, Brazil; and Missoula, Montana, they would all have something very special in common: their study of the weekly Bible Lesson. These lessons stand as a fulfillment of Jeremiah's prophecy: "I will give you pastors according to mine heart, which shall feed you with knowledge and understanding." Jer. 3:15. Wherever we may be, whatever hour it may be, God's instructive and healing Word is available to us. The Bible Lessons are designed to support, encourage, instruct, heal, comfort, and inspire. They are designed to awaken us to the evidence of Immanuel, "God with us."
These Bible Lessons are contained in the Christian Science Quarterly and are composed of passages from the Bible and related selections from the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, who discovered and founded Christian Science. The lessons are translated into thirteen languages and English-Braille. Students of these lessons study them frequently and earnestly during the week before they are delivered as the Sunday sermon.
