Each day I am filled with a feeling of blessedness when I think of all that Christian Science is to me. It truly shows mankind how to follow the Way-shower, Christ Jesus.

In former years, not only did I not belong to any church but I didn't believe in God at all. Rather, I didn't believe in a God that many churches honored; to me He seemed unjust and unloving, punishing good people and bestowing a wonderful life on the bad. I didn't want to have anything to do with such a God. Despite that, I reached for the Bible time and again. I thought there must be something special about this book that would make its statements relevant even today. But each time I would put it aside again, disappointed because I couldn't understand it.

At that time I was struggling with loneliness. I'd also started to drink, and smoked more and more. I'd always been a very timid individual, full of inhibitions, fears, and feelings of inferiority. At times I was so miserable and desperate that I seriously considered suicide. Since I was convinced that death brings an end to life, I saw absolutely no purpose to my short existence.
