At one point several years ago I made plans to have class instruction in Christian Science. I was looking forward to this two-week period of spiritual study but felt uneasy about going through with it because, at that time, our home situation appeared very unsettled.

As a result of administrative inharmonies my husband had resigned his teaching position, effective at the close of the school year, and with no prospects in sight for another job. He had been confident that, because of his excellent teaching record, there'd be no difficulty finding a new job. But this did not prove to be the case. In spite of countless applications, there were still no job offers by August. In addition, we had decided to move, but our house had not yet been sold, nor were there any offers for it. Finally, a court case that would require my presence was pending; it involved a teacher two of our children had had in school.

In view of all this, I decided to cancel taking class instruction and so informed my prospective teacher. She, in turn, emphatically informed me that God was in control, and that taking class instruction would benefit all whom my life touched because it was taking a stand for spiritual progress; it was putting God first. I agreed, realizing that fussing and fretting all summer had not helped resolve the difficulty. Indeed I needed to turn wholeheartedly to God, to recognize that at that moment God was cherishing and employing His children. One week before class was to start I received a subpoena to appear in court. My apprehensions involving this turn of events were quieted by discussing the situation with my teacher and by acknowledging that God's law is supreme.
