Washing feet vs washing hands
Pilate washes his own hands
dismissing guilt.
He listens to the people's cry
and yields, aware it is a lie.
Avoids responsibility.
Jesus washes others' feet,
humbly, kneeling,
gently moves each trace of earth,
reveals man's innate purity.
Accepts responsibility.
Shall I stand uninvolved, alone,
seeing man mortal, bound?
Or softly bend to help my brother,
man's spiritual likeness uncover—
my responsibility.
