As a newcomer I enjoyed attending Sunday services and Wednesday testimony meetings at a local branch Church of Christ, Scientist. However, the radical healing method of Science didn't have much meaning for me until some months later, when I seemed to be enduring a number of physical problems.
I was taking approximately twenty pills a day by doctors' prescriptions. There was a period when I was confined to bed for a few days surrounded by medicine and feeling very sorry for myself. That's when I decided to call a Christian Science practitioner for help. She read passages to me from Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy and told me about man—God's spiritual, perfect man—as understood in Christian Science. The truth of what the practitioner said made me realize how much I needed Science. About half an hour later, I felt completely well and went down to the shops to have breakfast with a friend. It was then that I knew I'd been healed and recognized that I must rely only on God if I wanted to be truly healthy—not on material aids or drugs. I made the choice at that moment and was so sure of it that when I returned home I threw out all the pills I owned—and never replaced them.
For many years I'd had constipation, and after that first healing I honestly prayed for myself concerning it. However, I got to a point where it seemed best to call on the support of a practitioner. This woman read to me from Mrs. Eddy's writings and reminded me that Mind is omnipotent, completely in control of its creation. I continued my own prayer and study along these lines and in less than a week I found the difficulty had vanished.
