During a summer college program some years...

During a summer college program some years ago, two other members of my family and I were simultaneously stricken with an illness. As Christian Scientists, we prayed to see that man's well-being is guaranteed as the son of God. Some of the students in my college class, however, became alarmed at my appearance and asked the director of the program to recommend that I see a doctor. He did, and I agreed to a physical examination.

A local doctor diagnosed the illness as infectious hepatitis. He wanted to hospitalize me immediately, but I asked if I couldn't instead be quarantined in the house we had rented and keep him informed of my progress. This met with his approval and, returning home, I stopped to phone a nearby Christian Science practitioner for help. She agreed to pray for the two other family members and me and asked that we study the allegory of the court case on pages 430-442 of Science and Health With Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy.

I must admit that this section of the textbook had meant little to me in the past, but it certainly meant something now! I spoke with the practitioner on a Thursday, and by Friday the three of us were able to retain food for the first time in days. I knew that I was healed. The director of the institute phoned on Saturday, and I informed him that I was much improved and would be able to attend class on Monday. He explained that because of state laws I needed a clean bill of health in order to reenter the class. I asked if I had to return to the same physician as before for the checkup, and he replied that any physician could do this.
