A title to remember
There is a little book entitled Unity of Good, written by Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science. Those familiar with the book may slip over the title without much thought, but closer attention to its message finds a statement of vast significance. One can hear in it the ancient cry "Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord" Deut. 6:4. and find in it obedience to Christ Jesus' reinforcement of this early teaching: "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind." Matt. 22:37. When we realize that God, good, is the one unified whole, a person's devotion to Him involves not only religious sentiment but a need to view everything one is concerned with in the light of understanding this spiritual wholeness.
Today there is increasing emphasis on the need to consider man, including the universe, as whole. In Christian Science there is a rational basis for this because its teachings recognize that man reflects the wholeness of God. This recognition, and the living that accords with it, should enable us to continue to take ever more progressive steps out of the disunity and chaos expressed in two world wars; conflict of nations, classes, and races; and the fragmentation of the human personality and its relationships. Christian Science enables us to ready ourselves for a much higher expression of the unity of goodness. As Mrs. Eddy writes, "The Scriptures plainly declare the allness and oneness of God to be the premises of Truth, and that God is good: in Him dwelleth no evil." Miscellaneous Writings, p. 93.
Unity is a spiritual fact. That it is not a permanent condition of matter is obvious when we consider the splatter of a dropped egg or the disorganizing potential of a bomb. But recognizing unity as spiritual, we can reverse material evidence of disunity. As there is one God, there is one creation—nothing external which can come in to disrupt and confuse. There is one power, exercised at the direction of the one Mind, God.
